Slack Skin On Inner Arms

If you find that slack skin on your inner arms is noticeable and affecting your self-confidence, you aren’t alone. The area can be particularly visible compared to other parts of the body, so any sagging can quickly influence the clothes we wear – especially sleeveless tops – and how we feel in them too. Our arms are also particularly susceptible to slack skin, both as we age and due to weight fluctuations. Luckily, as our FAQ answers explain, there are various ways to tone and tighten the skin on your arms if you wish. You can read all about them below.

What is slack skin on the inner arms?

Slack skin typically refers to skin that looks and feels like it is sagging or loose, normally because it has lost its elasticity and firmness. It can occur on various parts of the body, but many people tend to especially notice it around their inner arms. That’s because the skin in this area tends to be thinner and may have less support from underlying muscles compared to other parts of the body.

What causes slack skin on the inner arms?

Several factors can contribute to slack skin on the inner arms. They include:

  1. Ageing: As we age, our skin produces less collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins that provide skin structure and elasticity. This leads to a loss of firmness, which may contribute to slack skin.
  2. Weight and muscle loss: Significant weight loss can lead to excess skin that has lost some of its ability to bounce back. Similarly, muscle atrophy from your lifestyle or ageing can contribute to reduced skin support, leading to sagging.
  3. Genetics: Slack skin on your arms may run in your family. Some people are more predisposed to developing loose skin as they age due to their genes.
  4. Sun exposure: Our arms can be out in the sun quite a lot, especially in the summer, but overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can accelerate collagen breakdown and skin ageing, resulting in slack skin.
  5. Poor diet and hydration: Poor nutrition and hydration can also contribute to poor skin quality on your arms and the rest of your body. This can make loose or saggy skin look worse or more noticeable.

What tweakments are on offer for tightening the skin on inner arms?

There are several tweakments available that focus on tightening skin on the arms, predominately by non-invasively stimulating the production of key structural proteins, such as collagen.

  1. Laser skin rejuvenation: Non-ablative laser treatments can stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin to target mild to moderate sagging. Examples include Moxi – a device that treats the early signs of skin ageing by stimulating your body’s natural wound-healing response.
  2. Radiofrequency: Radiofrequency treatments work by heating the deeper layers of the skin to promote collagen synthesis and improve skin tightness, which can improve the appearance of slack skin on the arms. For skin laxity, the BTL Exilis Ultra 360 device is expert-recommended.
  3. HIFEM: Standing for high-intensity focused electro-magnetic technology, these body contouring devices, such as EMSCULPT, use electromagnetic contractions to stimulate and firm your muscles, while also burning fat. It can also be used in combination with radiofrequency to maximise the benefits.
  4. HIFU: High-Intensity Focussed Ultrasound uses ultrasound waves at high intensity, focused on a single point to stimulate collagen production and to tighten the skin at a deeper level than HIFEM. Best for slack but not severely sagging skin, Ultherapy is the only ultrasound-based device with FDA clearance for its lifting claim, while ULTRAcel Q+ uses HIFU lifts and tightens up to three times faster than other devices.
  5. Sofwave: Predominately a face and neck treatment, Sofwave can also be used on the body by a trained practitioner. The skin-tightening device uses ultrasound energy, but unlike HIFU it works on a more superficial level within the skin itself to tighten and lift. Each ‘shot’ of energy treats a large area of tissue at the right depth and temperature to stimulate collagen and elastin.
  6. AirSculpt: If excess fat is causing sagging on your arms, AirSculpt by Elite Body Sculpture is a minimally invasive alternative to liposuction that can help. It not only uses innovative spinning technology to pluck out your fat cell by cell, but also tightens and tones, so you get sculpting results for your arms too.

What surgical options are there?

For more severe sagging on the arms, surgical solutions may be needed to see noticeable results. These include:

  1. Brachioplasty (arm lift surgery): This surgical procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the upper arms to achieve a more contoured appearance.
  2. Liposuction: Liposuction – which utilises invasive suction to remove specific areas of fat – can be used to target excess fat on your inner arms. This can provide a tightening effect that improves the appearance of sagging skin to some degree.

Can I tighten the skin on my inner arm naturally?

Simple lifestyle changes can go some way to helping tighten the slack skin on your arms. In particular, strength training arm exercises may help you build muscle, giving the impression of tighter skin by providing more support to the underlying tissue. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive sun exposure can also help slow down the progression of slack skin on the arms. However, such changes are unlikely to reverse significant sagging or provide long-term solutions.

Are there skincare options that can improve the concern?

Skincare that contains ingredients like retinoids – for boosting skin renewal – and peptides – which aim to trigger your skin’s natural repair process – can improve skin texture and firmness to a certain extent. Dehydrated skin is also more prone to sagging so invest in a hydrating body cream or lotion. However, skincare is unlikely to significantly reverse slack skin on the arms alone.

Are there at-home devices that can help with slack skin on my arms?

There are various skin-tightening devices available for at-home use, such as radiofrequency or LED body devices. However, their effectiveness may be limited compared to professional treatments.

How much, on average, would treating slack skin on your arms cost?

The cost of treating slack skin can vary significantly based on the chosen treatment, the provider’s expertise, and your location. Non-invasive treatments are generally less expensive than surgical procedures. You can expect to pay from around: £350 for radiofrequency; £400 for laser; and £1500 for HIFU.

Could slack skin on the arms indicate a medical issue that needs further investigation?

In rare cases, slack skin on the inner arms could indicate an underlying medical issue, such as connective tissue disorders or hormonal imbalances. If you are concerned, consult with your doctor to get personalised advice.

Hi Alice, as you know I follow you avidly on Instagram and value your opinion. I am 53, very slim (size 6 to 8) and I am fit, I exercise (run, walk, yoga). I can't find a treatment to tighten my sagging arms which are very crepey on the upper...

Hi, it sounds like you have tried a lot already. If your practitioner thinks polynucleotides will help with the crepey skin on your arms, and you've seen benefits on your face/ neck, I would give them a go. I tried Profhilo Body in my inner arms (with Dr Preema, the video is on that link) and saw a definite result. If you don't already take a collagen supplement, I'd add that in, I am sure it helps my own skin quality. As does HRT, as having oestrogen back in the system enables the skin to produce more collagen, which improves the results you get from any collagen-boosting tweakment....
